Sunflowers pay homage to the path’s name juxtaposed against colors and patterns reflecting Oakland’s diversity, crowned by the symbolic image of a phoenix.
Mythology gave sunflowers the symbolism of longevity and devotion. In some cultures they symbolize creation and happiness. Originally cultivated by Native Americans, sunflowers represented harvest, bounty, and provision because they provide food, medicine, pigment and more.
The phoenix is the mythical bird that rises from the ashes, triumphing over a history of adversity.The phoenix has a legacy in many cultures, whose interpretations of its symbolism including life, magic, clarity, resurrection, rebirth, and renewal.
